Love, heartbreak and hatred — all themes touched on in Colorblind’s debut album, Who Sold You This Truth + Was It Yours To Hold. Singer-songwriter Travis Moseley rips open his heart, pouring all of his deepest feelings into the lyrics across the fifteen tracks. The album is a whirlwind of emotion, perfectly crafted to have listeners in awe through every song.
Who Sold You This Truth + Was It Yours To Hold joins Colorblind’s discography as their first official album, succeeding their past EPs. The band — consisting of vocalist Travis Moseley, drummer Tyler Moseley, guitarist Justin Page and bassist Nicholas Asper — have worked tirelessly to craft this album, all while playing shows across the country. It is truly the perfect collection of work from the band, blending their rock and dreamcore aesthetic with lyricism that is sure to pull on your heart strings.
“Needle Eye,” the first single announced, was the start of Colorblind’s dreamcore aesthetic. The song blends a heavy drum-centric instrumental with lyrics that tug at the heartstrings, all while maintaining that signature Colorblind flair that fans know and love. The track starts off with a soft and dreamy guitar riff, Travis’ vocals getting a moment to shine. The drums then kick in, perfectly connecting the start of the song to the heavier chorus.
Chronologically after the release of “Needle Eye,” Colorblind released five more singles. Alongside the release of “Neversleep,” it was announced that these previously released tracks were a part one to their debut album Who Sold You This Truth + Was It Yours To Hold. The decision to release the album in this way caught immediate attention from fans, as it is something not often seen in the industry. When asked about the decision to release the album this way, Travis exclaimed: “We just released it in this way because we had so many songs that we were proud of and wanted to make sure we could shine a light on all of them in a cool creative way!” And shine a light they did. Who Sold You This Truth allowed for these songs to sit with their audience, gaining more hype for the release date of the album. The strategy was eye-catching, and gave Colorblind the perfect momentum to gain more fans ahead of the release.
Following the release of part one, Colorblind’s excitement didn’t stop there. In the past few months, Colorblind have released album tracks “Pressure,” “Chemical Warfare,” “The Countdown” and “Lost In Translation.” The latter was the final album single released by the band, hitting streaming platforms only twenty-one days before the release of the album. “Pressure” was performed live shortly after its official release, the hard-hitting instrumentals connecting positively with the audience, moshpits and crowdsurfing at their peak. It is safe to say this track’s live performances gained them fans, as the room’s energy was sky high. When speaking on their live performances, Travis shared that his favorite track off the album to perform live is “Neversleep,” as their audience is always singing the lyrics back to the band — and it is an experience he will never forget.
While the album has its explosive energy tracks like “Misery Loves Company,” “God Complex” and “Letdown,” it also has its solemn counterparts. Sandwiched between two instrumental-heavy tracks, “The Countdown” trades their lively guitars and drums for something more tear-jerking and emotional. Travis expresses his inner emotions and doubts due to a previous relationship, the heavy weight emotion hitting listeners right in the feels.
As the album nears its end, emotions are still high. Second to last track “PARADOX” has the listener still in the depths of Travis’ mind, but with the drums and guitar back to add to the heaviness of the lyrics. “I have a paradox within me because I can be my own worst enemy,” Travis shares — a theme that is sure to resonate with listeners. The vulnerability that is expressed through Colorblind’s music is an influential one, with many people finding solace in hearing they are not alone when faced with certain struggles.
The final track on the album, “Cynical,” follows in the footsteps of “The Countdown,” Travis’ vocals taking on a more isolated approach. Tyler, Page and Asper’s instrumentals are minimal in the song, creating an added emotion as Travis pours out his heart on top of a soft acoustic guitar.
Before the album’s release, Crave had the chance to speak with Travis Moseley and discuss Who Sold You This Truth + Was It Yours To Hold, their live shows and the love from their fans.
CRAVE: How is this album of Colorblind different from your previous work? How has your sound developed between this album and the past EPs?
TRAVIS: I think we’ve honestly just explored more. Heavier songs and also lighter / poppier songs! I feel like we’ve really refined who we are on this album.
CRAVE: “The Countdown” and “Cynical” are one of your most vulnerable/stripped down tracks on this album. What made you decide to go that route instead of your signature rock instrumental?
TRAVIS: That song was one of the last songs written. It was on a day where we were wanting to explore a little more. We called our friend Joel Ferber, who plays in a band called True North, and he started messing around with those chords on an acoustic guitar. It felt like we blinked our eyes and the song came out!
CRAVE: “PARADOX” touches on self-doubt and negative imagery. What does this song mean to you?
TRAVIS: I tried to be as transparent as I could possibly be in the lyrics of that song, but it just means that I have a paradox within me because I can be my own worst enemy.
CRAVE: The album release has been very interesting, with the first six singles being compiled on an EP, Who Sold You This Truth. What was the mindset for splitting the album up into two halves? What does each half represent?
TRAVIS: We just released it in this way because we had so many songs that we were proud of and wanted to make sure we could shine a light on all of them in a cool creative way!
CRAVE: Were there any songs that didn’t make the album that almost did? What made you decide to pick the final ones?
TRAVIS: We had about 40 songs written for the album. We just had to really sit down as a band and talk about which ones were important to us while using the process of elimination.
CRAVE: The singles are already deep and vulnerable. What other emotions or stories did you tap into when putting together the album?
TRAVIS: We really tried to explore everything on this album! There are a lot of surprises.
CRAVE: What do your plans look like after the album release? Any promo/headlining shows for fans to look forward to?
TRAVIS: We have a tour with Catch Your Breath that begins in October that we are so excited for. Getting to play all these new songs is so much fun!
CRAVE: Which song off the new album are you most excited to perform live?
TRAVIS: “Neversleep” is so much fun live. People have so much fun singing that song and it is such a cool thing to experience!
