The road to sobriety can be long and winding for anyone, and admitting to yourself that there are issues that need to be resolved is no easy task. Remi Wolf opens the doors to how her own journey has been in new single “Bottle,” taking accountability for her actions and showing how conflicting it can be to want growth for yourself.
Following the release of her most recent single “Twiggy,” “Bottle” has a funky and nostalgic end-of-summer sound. The track is groovy and easily danceable, bringing a nostalgic energy while simultaneously being loaded with a deep conversation of Wolf’s admittance of her internal struggles.
In the first verse Wolf seems to be compiling a list, naming all of these unnecessary instances that she notices that don’t have anything to do with the actual problem. “Penny in the parking lot / Sleeping with the TV on.” She avoids acknowledging the issues at hand, even though she knows deep down exactly what they are, in fear the issues will become ‘real.’
The track flows like a back-and-forth pep talk to herself. Through the chorus, we see the self conflict within Wolf, spitting constant contradictions. She does acknowledge some of the main issues, and even states the solutions. Yet, once again, like the continuous cycle, she refuses to resolve them. She continues on with a dry and humorous approach to a solution – Wolf’s signature tongue-in-cheek writing style.
“I can’t get the bottle if I don’t get up”

Throughout the second verse and bridge is where the track gets the most unapologetically vulnerable, despite how heavy it seems in the beginning lines. Wolf admits she can’t even think about everything going on inside because it upsets her; her own guilt is slowly swallowing her. Wolf’s subconscious is desperately trying to tell her she has a problem. She spirals more and more as she self-deprecates, calling herself an ‘idiot’ and promising she’ll change, but it seems to repeat as an “off and on and off again” empty promise.
In the middle of all this, Wolf has random confidence bursts between her admittance, showing the mania she’s facing thinking it’s motivation for actual change. She returns back to stating how she’s “Bitchin’ and pouting” and she “Should’ve never showed up.” But yet she did, and at the end of the day, she wants this change for herself.
Along with the release of “Bottle,” Wolf announced via social media her third studio album Mud, to be released on Oct. 8. The announcement also came with a surprise pop-up backyard performance in Los Angeles’ Echo Park where she performed an intimate set featuring “Twiggy” and the live debut of “Bottle,” along with other unreleased songs from Mud.
Wolf spoke with Pitchfork about Mud, revealing she was going through some personal conflicts and hard times before the album’s creation.
“I literally felt like I was covered in shit…. Now, at the end of the album process, I feel so clean and clear.”
Wolf also revealed the Mud tracklist within the “Bottle” music video (directed by Wolf and Milo Nichols). The video features a lone spinning wheel posted on a sunny beach shoreline while Wolf marches towards it and gives it a good spin, zooming in as the wheel slows down to reveal the tracklist.
