Five Door Sedan proves that organic musicianship never goes out of style with their newest single, “Everything.” Intertwining the psychedelics of the ’60s, the spontaneity of jazz and an irresistible funk groove, the quartet creates a track that feels alive from start to finish. Rather than chasing the fast-paced trends dominating today’s music landscape, “Everything” embraces every instrumental moment, allowing every player to shine. The result is a song that pulls you into its vibrant atmosphere, making you never want to leave by the final minute.

Hailing from Charleston, South Carolina, Five Door Sedan has quickly become one of the Southeast’s most riveting rising indie rock acts, crafting a reputation for dance-inducing live performances that blend psychedelic rock influences and free-flowing improvisation. The band — Dakota Muckey (lead vocals and guitar), William Sanders (bass and vocals), Bradley Palles (drums) and Kwame Newton (saxophone, keys and vocals) — plan to keep this energy pumping as they continue touring across the states. As the last sneak peek into their forthcoming sophomore album — set to release in October — “Everything” showcases the band’s talent at pairing infectious musicianship with sharp storytelling.

“She broke my guitar and / Went and called the cops / I’ve been sittin’ around waiting / On the other shoe to drop”

With the opening lyrics, the band sets up the complicated relationship at the song’s center. Despite the unpredictable, borderline toxic behavior, there’s still an undeniable desire and attraction for the person. It’s a cheeky, yet blunt encapsulation of being tangled up in a relationship you know isn’t good for you, but one that you can’t help but keep coming back to. The cycle of chaotic temptation is emphasized even more with Muckey repeating “Every, every, every, every, every” before “Everything she done.” The repetition mirrors the emotional loop itself in a playful, light-hearted manner that enforces the charm Five Door Sedan leaks into their music.

Musically, the jazz elements radiate in the entire track, carrying a bold brightness that entrances the listener. There is no rush to get through the instrumental breaks, an incredibly refreshing feature where every section is allowed to seep in naturally, fueling the movement the song effortlessly evokes. The groove of the rhythm guitar and nostalgic disco of the keyboard push the funkadelic energy forward, while the buzz of the saxophone and rolling drums ignite the spark of jazz’s golden age. Every single instrument and vocal riff has its time in the spotlight — nothing is reduced to mere background support. There’s a fluidity to the arrangement that feels light, yet incredibly mature.

Muckey’s vocals are naturally smooth but carry just enough grit through subtle rasps and voice cracks that give the song a grounded, lived-in feel. Sander’s bass riff before the second set of verses adds another layer to the swaying boogie the track indulges you with — setting up excitement for what’s to come. By the time the guitar solo melts into Newton’s saxophone solo, the band is exploding with a celebration of instruments. The thrill of Palles’s drums gives way to an anticipating atmosphere built on bass hits, cymbal taps and laid-back vocals echoing, “Everything she / Everything she / Everything she does.” The anticipation of the musicality and vocals cleverly reflects the state of being in this relationship, constantly on edge and in preparation for chaos. The escalation continues as more instruments jump into the mix until the song’s conclusion; even when the song ends, you still find yourself dancing.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of “Everything” is how it feels like a live take. Each instrument and vocal moment plays off one another with pure fun and a loose energy that can only be achieved when musicians genuinely love the music they’re playing. That love and appreciation for authentic instrumentation becomes contagious, spreading to the listener with ease. Five Door Sedan are reviving the passion that catches fire from witty songwriting and raw, lively musical arrangements — with “Everything” being a match to that flame.
