The state of Rhode Island is mostly overlooked because of its size, but for singer-songwriter Ruby Mac, it’s home. Nestled amongst the bustling streets of Providence, AS220, a small community-run venue, was home to Mac’s set as part of the venue’s free music Wednesdays — their unique effort to keep the arts affordable and accessible. The emerging artist made waves as she spent the night surrounded by friends, family and strangers — the community coming together to support the singer.

Opening up the show, Berklee College of Music student and fellow singer-songwriter, Tessa Brown, shared her love of music as her honey-like vocals filled the room during her 45-minute acoustic set. Sharing personal stories and quips with the audience, Brown’s energy was as infectious and powerful as her music. Playing personal favorites and long-workshopped tracks, Brown was the perfect addition to the music-filed night.

Later into the night, Mac made her way onto the stage and rode the high of the audience’s energy. Mac started her set off with the track “Grapes,” setting the tone for her performance and letting the audience in on her experiences with love and heartbreak. She then followed up with three other tracks, “Leave Her Alone,” “Legacy” and “Unspoken.” After the final chords of “Unspoken” came to an end, Mac shared with the audience that it was inspired by an ex-boyfriend. She then used that information to segue into the next song also inspired by the ex, recent single “I hate you.” The emotional, yet powerful track allowed Mac’s vocals to shine, leaving the audience in awe as she poured her heart out into the microphone.

Toward the middle of her set, Mac chose to perform a cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You,” allowing emotions to soar as the artist beautifully hit every note. Her soft, yet strong vocals captured everyone’s hearts, her family in the audience filled with admiration as they watched a loved one following her dreams. Following the cover, the singer created the perfect opportunity to shoutout her sister, Piper, for helping her with the songwriting process of the next song. The familiar dedication was heartwarming, and it allowed for Mac to appreciate her family that came out to support her.

Nearing the end, Mac shared with the audience that the newest project she is working on is one that she is extremely proud of, especially since she has been working on it mostly solo. This creative decision allows for Mac to show her skills and hard work, not just as a singer-songwriter, but in the realm of production as well. Her drive and dedication did not go unnoticed, as the next few tracks performed were emotionally raw and beautiful. Closing out her set, Mac performed unreleased track “Fatally Attracted,” that had the audience infatuated with the upbeat melodies and stunning vocals. It especially captivated ears when she sang the phrase “slutty Little glasses” in the chorus, standing out as a familiar and personal callback to the iconic comments made about Jurassic Park: Rebirth actor Jonathan Bailey last summer.

After the set came to a close, Mac took the time to talk one-on-one with those that attended, thanking them for coming to support her. It was a touching and heartwarming moment, showing that Mac truly loves what she does. Her talent and love for the arts makes her one to watch, and we cannot wait to see what is next in store for her.
