Em Beihold’s career has been a worldwide phenomenon. Her success with “Numb Little Bug” in 2022 and her EPs Infrared and Egg in the Backseat garnered a dedicated fan base that patiently waited for her debut album. Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter, out February 27th, is highly anticipated after a couple years without a release from this pop sensation. Beihold went through a process of attempting to shapeshift after hitting a wall in her creative process, but found that who she was before was the person she needed to be to write this album.

Three singles were released prior to the album release, “Scared of the Dark,” “Hot Goblin,” and “Brutus,” showcase Beihold’s skill in crafting sonically different songs that feel like they belong together. She goes between her roots of melodic piano tracks and upbeat pop hits throughout the singles which leave the listener an exciting idea of how the album would sound.

1824° held a virtual press conference where many music publications, including Crave Music Magazine, were able to dig deep into Em Beihold’s thought processes, routines, and musical creations ahead of the release of Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter. Every publication gathered a deep and introspective list of questions that had Beihold diving into heartfelt responses on her music. When I had the chance to ask about Beihold’s pension for referring or comparing herself to mythical creatures or animals, she replied with inspiring honesty.

“I think the truth of the matter is this is something I realize after the fact,” Beihold said. “And have with all of these songs. It’s not like an intentional choice, but I’ve learned I have this strange gut-like, knee-jerk reaction, I guess, to write songs with unassuming adjectives describing creatures. It’s just a little peek into my brain, it’s not intentional at all.”

Em Beihold’s whimsical nature, lyrics, and comparisons are all natural to who she is as a person, creating a magical environment throughout her songs and storytelling. After being given a sneak peek into the album at the press conference, it’s certain fans of Beihold have much to look forward to with Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter.
