Experimental-hyperpop artist SUUNCAAT has returned with brand new single “work,” a deeply cathartic exploration into the relentless cycle of grind culture and the strain placed on the working class. In her words, “It’s a motivational anthem for the neurotics: for anyone who keeps pushing the boulder, even when it keeps rolling back down.”
Montreal-based artist SUUNCAAT immersed herself in music from an early age, having been raised on classical violin before expanding into the world of production and experimental styles. Her technical training soon became a platform from which she plunged into carving out alternate realities and created immersive experiences through music. With roots in Montreal’s punk and underground scene along with influences from classical, electronic and other alternative styles, no two songs sound quite alike. Her unique genre-bending sound, which she describes as “outsider hyperpop,” explores themes from all facets of the human experience. Her own mythological universe, born from the characters and personas she has developed throughout her career, serve as a safe place from which to explore these ideas.
Inspired by the myth of Sisyphus, her latest single “work” is an anthem for the compulsive workers —those who feel compelled to keep going in spite of everything else. The ethereal start of the track with its thumping rhythm gradually builds tempo until it gives way to a harsher, more distorted sound as it progresses, re-creating the feeling of being overwhelmed and consumed by the weight of outside pressure.
Feelings of frustration are represented throughout as a sharp commentary on overcompensating for others shortcomings and the innate need to shoulder the burden yourself. Even though the weight of the theme can seem suffocating, the euphoric textured beats still impart the infectious need to move —offering a cathartic release to listeners.
The world of SUUNCAAT is constantly evolving, her beautifully dystopian collection of entities and characters continue to grow, and her efforts to break down genre barriers while developing her own distinctive niche in the industry doesn’t seem to be slowing down either. This is not the end for SUUNCAAT and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
