MILWAUKEE FOLLOWED DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE INTO THE DARK

Gracing Milwaukee for the first time since 2023, Death Cab for Cutie made a historic return, now playing one of the city’s most historic venues, The Miller High Life Theater. Joined by rising indie rock band Jay Som, this night was bound for all the feels to rise to the top.

Atypically, this show was majorly seated, with a smaller GA standing area. In retrospect, these seats should’ve been stocked with tissues.

Opening the evening, Jay Som delivered a warm and fun set that eased the audience into the night’s mood, especially with lead singer Melina Duterte’s dreamy vocals. The crowd was definitely receptive to Jay Som, and although this artist is definitely still rising, they have made waves and are becoming a “you have to know, to know” type of artist; a hidden gem.

As the house lights came to a soft fade, the Miller High Life Theater exploded with cheers as Death Cab for Cutie took to the stage. Although they are known for switching up their setlists, their choice to open with “Riptides” had everyone’s attention; a sea of faces grinning ear to ear. From casual fans to diehards who dressed up as the album cover of their latest album, I Built You A Tower, Milwaukee showed up for Death Cab for Cutie.

Balanced between fan favorites like “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” — which indeed brought me to tears — and deeper cuts, each song flowed naturally into the next. I think a big factor that went into that pacing was the light design. The major LED wall lended itself to be a part of the storytelling, the vibes were immaculate.

This venue also helped tell this story through its historic, and grandiose, visuals made this concert feel like a full-on theatrical performance, and less of an everyday show. From the top of the house to the front of the barricade, being in the crowd didn’t make me feel like a spectator. Watching this show, and being together with the people of Milwaukee felt like a shared experience.

Rather than relying on that production, Death Cab for Cutie still let their music do the heavy lifting, moody, dark, but tasteful. It made me, as part of the audience, feel welcomed to be expressive, introspective and just appreciate the band that just continues to give their all. Their music has always resonated with the more emo folk, with that slower, controlled, “cry in the shower” music.

It was a reminder why Death Cab for Cutie continues to grow and reach a new generation with every tour they embark on.
