Some songs feel carefully crafted for release, others were never supposed to leave the notebook they were written in. Mimi bay’s new single, “my boy,” belongs somewhere in between.

Fans may already recognize the song from the demo mimi bay shared on SoundCloud more than a year ago. Ahead of its official release, mimi bay revealed that she had recently reread a few pages from the diary she kept when writing it, describing the song as something that felt special to finally share with anyone who wanted to listen.

Mimi bay is a Swedish singer-songwriter who first gained attention online through her YouTube channel by posting covers and original songs. Over the years, she has developed a sound that blends bedroom and dream pop with soft indie influences, often turning personal experiences, memories and emotions into comforting songs. Since 2017, she has quietly built an impressive discography that reflects her consistency and artistic evolution.

The song captures the feeling of being completely devoted to someone, conveyed through a soft and gentle sound. Mimi bay sings about someone who has become the centre of her world, questioning why she would want to spend time alone or return to old habits when he’s by her side. The lyrics carry the honesty of thoughts that were written down before there was any intention of turning them into a song.

“It all just seems so boring / Why would I ever want to do anything else / Let him be all by himself, I can’t be all by myself.”

Mimi bay portrays love as needing another person as a kind of anchor. The production supports that feeling. The repeated “my boy” echoes throughout the song like a recurring thought, while the instruments keep everything feeling light and effortless. There is a repetition built into the lyrics and the music, echoing the way one person can take over your thoughts completely.

What makes “my boy” particularly memorable is the feeling that listeners are being invited into a memory. Knowing that the song originated more than a year ago was special enough to give it an official place. The fact that it was inspired by diary entries gives the track an added layer of experience; that mimi bay is not just sharing a love song, but sharing a version of herself from a specific point in her life.
