Cherry Bomb trades the beloved rage of Alanis Morrisette’s “You Oughta Know” for a sparkly, house-pop groove in her version of the 1995 classic. Born from the wild imagination of MisterWives frontwoman Mandy Lee, the Los Angeles-based solo project celebrates self-liberation, defiance and nostalgia through an insatiable dance-pop spirit.

Lee describes this vibrant take on “You Oughta Know” as a tribute to the music that raised her and influenced the sound of Cherry Bomb. She effortlessly transforms the unbridled fury into a sickly sweet reclamation of autonomy through glittering synths and compelling vocals. She manages to stay in touch with the original’s emotional core despite completely twisting every element of the song into her own bright neon fantasy. Lee proves that heartbreak is no match for the dancefloor as each pulsing beat pushes the pain of the past further and further away.

The bold, colorful rendition of “You Oughta Know” builds upon Cherry Bomb’s empowering story of resilience and resistance that first presented itself in previous singles “Never Be Me (M★ther★cker)” and “Digital Girl.” Speaking on the shimmering cover, Lee shares,

“I’ve been listening to the band across the street from my house cover this classic from their garage every Saturday and it sparked the idea for what I should cover for these first Cherry shows,” Lee says. “I couldn’t think of a better song to pay homage to the artists that paved the way with a very cherry twist.”

This solo venture allows Lee to find power in femininity, cherry-picking pieces of iconic female acts that paved the way before her into an exciting rebirth that heals and inspires the inner self. In a dull, black-and-white world that thrives on insecurity and conformity, Cherry Bomb explodes in screaming color with each cathartic, playful release.

Cherry Bomb is set to play her first ever show at this year’s All Things Go Festival in New York City on Sept. 27 alongside other powerhouse female artists including MUNA, The Beaches, Hemlocke Springs, Grace Ives and Carly Rae Jepsen.
