Hope you haven’t put away those heels yet, because nightlife is back for the second week in a row with another top-tier hype song that bleeds confidence and feminine energy. “better off” is the perfect addition to a girls-night playlist that’ll have you forgetting about toxic exes and remembering how much you’re truly worth.

In an immediate follow-up to last week’s single “u know,” Baltimore-based group nightlife is back for more with their latest release “better off.” After a two-year hiatus from releasing new music, it’s clear that nightlife (Hansel Romero, Allan Romero and Isaiah Walker) haven’t wasted a single second between live performances. While the fans have been waiting eagerly for a taste of their latest projects, the band has been working hard behind the scenes to put out two hotshot singles and a music video, two weeks in a row.

This track is by far the heaviest song they’ve put out, coming in strong with downtuned guitars over a haunting, electronic sounding beat and perfectly accented drums. Both the vocals and lyrics are full of attitude and intensity, reminiscent of songs like “How You Like That” by BLACKPINK and “Drama” by Aespa, making it the perfect mix of metalcore and K-pop. These two genres that nobody would expect to blend come together perfectly with nightlife’s established soulpunk vibe to create something entirely new and invigorating.

The lyrics of the song perfectly encapsulate the feeling of picking yourself back up again after a conflict-ridden relationship, an assertive reminder that at the end of the day, you are so much better off without them. Halfway through the song, Baltimore artist Kotic Culture — known as the “Queen of the Underground” — starts her feature with “I’m so much better / I’m on my own” to really underline the message and bring the song to life with even more sass and attitude.

“better off” and “u know” are a powerhouse duo to kick off a new season of music, fusing unexpected genres to create a whole new sound perfectly suited to nightlife’s energy.

“Both of these lock in on our feminine side and show how fun it could be to let metal and rock be a bit more c*nt – but like, actually” said Hansel Romero, driving home the point that the band is not done experimenting with new ways to bring that fierce energy into their music.

It’s evident that this is just the beginning of a new era for nightlife, who will surely be back soon to continue to defy stereotypes and break even more musical boundaries. It’s bands like this who keep the scene fresh and forge new paths for even cooler, more creative projects to knock down barriers and give music a whole new life.
