With their newest single, “Covet,” Sace6 has managed to transform the heart-twisting feeling of envy into an utterly addictive song. The duo utilizes their talents at genre-bending — mixing emo, alternative metal and some electronic detailing — while still remaining cohesive and intentional. This intention shines on “Covet,” creating a harsh, yet emotion-filled soundscape with lyrics that paint a jealous, desire-filled picture.

What originally began as a solo endeavor for lead vocalist Sace, soon turned into an iconic duo when he joined forces with producer and guitarist Noah Thomas in 2024. Based in the New York-New Jersey area, the music duo pulls influences from Deftones, Bring Me The Horizon and Paramore — intertwining their inspirations and warping into something completely their own, something that can be uniquely described as ethereal metal rock. From their DIY origins to gaining traction in the alternative/emo-rap scene, Sace6 has never faltered within any of their booming tracks, and listeners can hear this relentless energy in their hits “Velvet” and “Ego,” and now in their latest single, “Covet.”

With the word “covet” meaning “to strongly desire, envy, or crave something that belongs to another person,” this emotional landscape is already set up in the opening lyrics: “Distract me while I’m driving / Two hands on the wheel / Girl, I’m trying / Not to stare at you and him in the backseat.” Already the listener feels envy dripping from every note, creating almost an angry form of empathy — feeling the same effects of jealous longing as he is. The musicality of the verses has an industrial techno feel to it, creating an electronic air using rock elements, for example, their use of a drum pad. During the pre-chorus, Sace sings, “Are you sure this is what you want?” He jumps up a note on the word “want” to deliver a run that holds a building strength behind it, only to immediately plunge the listener into the expansive, metal-laced sonic atmosphere for a teasing sample of the instrumental chorus. You can feel the beat drop in your bones, and it’s unapologetic in its aggression.

There is a natural contrast that comes across in the track, circling back to Sace’s falsetto before plummeting into the visceral instrumentals of the chorus. This drop-tower effect is both musically jolting and a striking showcase of the duo’s talents at creating that sense of duality cohesively, rather than it feeling like stark randomness. It’s an intuitive and effective choice as it brings out the emotional ups and downs that lie within the song’s lyrics. The held-back impulse and bitterness seep out of the verses, “Hands in his hair / Am I overreacting, or are you unaware,” only to explode into the frustration-filled chorus, “Already your mind’s made up / I have no say in it / Won’t change that you’re / In love with the idea.”

The track conveys the precarious energy of the emotional push-and-pull that arises from the confusing concoction of mixed feelings, wanting someone unattainable and the possibility of unrequited desire that hangs in the air. This experience in itself evokes a sense of uncontrollable vulnerability, which is physically felt in the vocals. It feels as if Sace is living and breathing every word, every lyric he sings with his heart and chest. On a technical scale, the runs as well as the vibrato that Sace utilizes are incredibly clean and sharp, almost mirroring a sense of control within the uncontrollable emotions of the situation. Despite the smoothness and clarity behind his voice, Sace still holds that natural rock energy that brings out the edge in their tracks.

“Covet” encapsulates the pain and exhaustion of reaching your hand out so far for someone, only for them to turn around and choose to hold someone else’s hand. The lack of power felt when you rely solely on the other person to decide the future of the relationship, and the loss of the ability to navigate the connection yourself. This harsh sentiment is felt the most in the bridge of the track. The instrumentals fade into a lingering breath as the space opens to highlight Sace’s vocals as he sings out the chorus lyrics. The commanding drums and electric guitar barrel in before the lyric, “In love with the idea,” grabbing your attention for just a few seconds before giving way to Sace’s little falsetto note change. As the bridge leads into the last thirty seconds of the song, every roll of the drums, every metal guitar riff, every vocal belt and run is felt ten times harder.

Sace6 scrapes the metallic taste jealousy leaves on one’s tongue and infuses it into their punch of a single, “Covet.” With this being their second single off their upcoming debut album, Brutalist (releases on May 8.), listeners are inching closer and closer to the edge of their seats for more of the duo’s thrashing, yet introspective songs.

Sace6 curates an energetic intensity that courses through not only “Covet” but through all of their tracks. This energy only heightens in their live performances, which they will be able to show off while supporting Dayseeker on the latter’s Pale Moonlight North American tour starting May 1st.
