One thing about Minnesota we could all learn from is their love for  community. During such a hard time they will always organize and show up for each other.

On January 23, the city of Minneapolis organized its first general strike since 1934, with an estimated 50,000+ individuals marching downtown in -20°F windchill demanding the removal of ICE agents from the state. Community members have also taken it upon themselves to help out in their own ways. DIY bands have played benefit shows with all door fees and merch sales going directly to local organizations. Strangers have even delivered groceries to families sheltering in place and have continuously helped the people slowly being released from the Whipple building get home safely after being wrongfully taken.

Living here, and witnessing what is happening in a place that you call home is devastating beyond words. The air feels heavy but not from the cold. Almost everyone is carrying a whistle. Things are tense and we are constantly looking over our shoulders but still need to make it to work in the morning. Hanging out with your friends and hoping they make it home safe grew a new larger layer of concern. But even living through all the hurt and evil, Minneapolis continues to be a city full of love.

Since the start of the new year, over 3,000 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been deployed to Minnesota.

Since the occupancy started, agents have been kidnapping, beating, and murdering legal United States citizens in broad daylight. Taking people out of their cars on the side of the road, taking parents from their kids’ bus stops, using flash bangs and tear gas grenades on crowds of peaceful individuals that simply just want them to go away.

In late January, Gregory Bovino’s departure from Minnesota was announced and was to be replaced by Border Czar Tom Homan. Homan then made a reduction of 700 agents leaving roughly 1,300 left in our cities. On February 12th, Tom Homan announced that ICE will be leaving Minnesota over the course of the next few weeks. Many feel relieved, however a majority will believe it when they see it as things haven’t changed, and the damage caused cannot be undone.

With the recent uptick in ICE presence across the U.S., Crave Music Magazine put together a list of resources to help MN residents, as well as some national resources, we encourage you to look at and donate if you can. Our hearts are with Minnesota at this overwhelming time.

As a way to support Minnesota families, Crave Music Magazine will be hosting a print sale. All proceeds will go to local organization Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC). To learn more, please visit our website on how to participate.
