Welcome to the stage Katy Kenny — an up-and-coming 26-year-old guitarist and songwriter currently residing in LA. The New York-native has a fresh and edgy style that shines brightly in conjunction with her cathartic storytelling. Reminiscent of Annie DiRusso and a young Hayley Williams, Kenny is delivering gut-punching grunge vocals on her latest single, “Bury.”

Kenny’s love for music was heavily influenced by her family, gravitating towards rock and pop-punk at an early age. She began releasing music onto streaming platforms in 2024 with her debut alternative single “Child.” It’s clear that from the beginning, gritty guitar riffs and dynamic drums have been a staple for her sound.

Released on Nov. 21, “Bury” describes the addictive nature of a lingering on-and-off relationship. Fallen victim to this, Kenny finds herself yearning for the attention from this partner, regardless of the desired outcome. From a thematic perspective, “Bury” is the older, more mature sister to her other single “Call It What You Want,” effectively expanding on the emotional whiplash she experienced.

“Bury” opens with steady, fast-paced drumming and shimmering electric guitar that sets the pace for the first verse. Kenny’s sharp vocals carry heavy, emotional depth, drawing the listener in almost immediately. Despite the pain she’s experiencing, Kenny finds herself coming back for more, effectively avoiding her true feelings.

In the second chorus, she sings, “Let my ego take the hit / You can call me a masochist / And once I let you get your fix / I’ll find a way to bury this.”

The climax of the song happens towards the outro, after the slow tempo guitar solo. Kenny softens her line delivery to compliment her lower register, emphasizing the vulnerability of the lyrics. At this point, Kenny is begging and pleading with this partner, trying to find some common ground with them.

Kenny laments, “I’m inpatient, I’m your crutch / Just for now, is that enough?”

“Bury” showcases Kenny’s strengths as a songwriter and performer: honest lyricism, vivid imagery, emotional tonality and vocal control. Instead of shying away from the messiness of young adulthood, she embraces it, complimenting the rawness of her creative process.
