Singer-songwriter Ally Nicholas recently released her debut EP Nevermind the Hurry, and here’s why you should be listening to it.

Nicholas is a Chicago-born rocker with a genre-bending sound accompanied by a unique voice. Ranging from raspy notes to belting her heart out, Nicholas doesn’t stray away from showing us her artistry. Each song on this EP is intricate in its own way, instrumentally and lyrically, which makes it such a wonderful listen. Nicholas released her first single, “Feels Like Dying” back in 2020 where she quickly gained a fanbase on the internet and has become a new up-and-coming artist in the alternative-rock world.

The first song, “Red,” starts off the EP perfectly with a softer intro of just vocals and electric guitar, which then drops into a powerful chord and strong drums, with a short pause that leaves you wanting more immediately. Slipping between soft and heavy, this one is sure to grab your attention.

“Hopeless devotion / A tide that binds / Some like it easy / I like my – I like it red / With a thorn in my side”

Drifting into the title track on the EP, “Nevermind the Hurry” is a more upbeat and layered song. Falling into her vices, Nicholas plays around with tempo a lot in this song, which creates a nice, punchy, and fun energy. It obviously can’t go without mentioning the guitar slides and epic guitar solo that really bring it all together.

The first single released off of the EP, “Right,” has a catchy melody alongside heavy guitar distortion. Nicholas described this song on her socials as more of a playful song compared to others she has released in the past, which comes through in the vocals and storyline painted with the lyrics.

“He puts the sun down the barrel of the gun / Like lovers do, he’s the shadow when I move / There’s a strong attraction”

“Killing” — the second single released off of the EP — has dialogue asking if she’s alone in a deep feeling of guilt or if there is something bothering her. Switching between heavy guitar distortion and acoustic pauses, Nicholas takes the song apart in a way that is incredibly satisfying, then throws it back together in a gut-wrenching pile of emotions communicated through the instruments alone.

Nicholas ends the EP with her softest song, “I Wanna Believe,” where she strips it down to an acoustic lead with some electric company. This song in particular really highlights Nicholas’ musical talents by showcasing such a soft song with so much emotion and build — not only with the instrumentals, but with her voice. This song emulates a feeling of lost trust and starting over; it feels like a conversation or a journal entry processing a connection.

In all, Ally Nicholas’ debut EP is a must-listen; preferably with headphones and with the volume turned all the way up. Nevermind The Hurry is such a wonderful introduction to Nicholas and her unbelievable talent. It will be such a treat to see what she has next up her sleeve.
