Ana Luna bursts brightly into the music space with new album Tainted Silhouettes. The album’s four singles were the perfect introduction into what exactly this musical era would hold for Luna and her listeners. A mix of her hauntingly beautiful vocals and deep, melodic instrumentals create the ethereal nine-track album.
Since her debut single in 2023, Ana Luna has cemented herself as a fresh, eccentric musician. Luna is worldwide — being born in Ukraine, raised in Paris and finally settling in Los Angeles — and her music is sure to follow in those footsteps.
The album concepts and single covers are a big step in understanding Tainted Silhouettes. The album cover shows Luna covered in rainbow paint, alone in a bubble, while she’s been reached for. The single covers illustrate her alone (or with a reflection of herself) set to dramatic lighting and dark background. These musical artworks relate to the themes of memory and reflection Luna sings of throughout the story of Tainted Silhouettes.
The singles of the album were a great buildup to Tainted Silhouettes. The first single, “Dance in a Trance”, was released this past May and explored the idea of realizing the red flags in a relationship. “Daddy’s Empire” came out in July, which delved into your partner trying to use you as a caregiver rather than a lover, “Can We Pretend We Just Met at a Bar?” dropped in August, and discussed wanting to start over a relationship you know is ending, and, most recently, “Bleeding Pen” was released on Sept. 19. The title Tainted Silhouettes features in this song.
The theme of heartbreak and the end of relationships feature heavily throughout all of the singles. The piano sets an atmospheric backdrop to draw forth the emotions that Luna weaves throughout with her enchanting vocals and poignant songwriting. The songs have almost a soothing effect to them as well. Even with the electric guitar and electronic elements woven through the album, Luna’s talent also encompasses creating an impactful song that carries elements similar to a lullaby, one reminiscent of fairy tales.
The other five tracks don’t drop the ball either. The whole album is strong from start to finish, keeping up the momentum previously laid out.
The opening track, “Fairy Tales,” is a stand out on Tainted Silhouettes. The echoing backing vocals drag the listener into the story Luna is singing out. One of the more lighter sounding tracks, “Fairy Tales” creates a soundscape in the likes of Aurora or Hozier, whimsical and magical, as the name would suggest. The lyrics speak of earlier, happier times in a relationship:
“Late night drives to your home town / Shared feelings, shared views / Nostalgia right around the corner, but let’s enjoy the moment”
“Fairy Tales” was the perfect song to set the stage for the rest of the album.
“Love Virgin,” the closing track of Tainted Silhouettes, helps tie the album together sonically and thematically. The subject of “Love Virgin” outlines the uncertainties of relationships. Is it automatically love because you say it is? If you don’t say it, is it not? With the previous touches of broken relationships, “Love Virgin” shows the side effects of partners who don’t show you true love.
The world needs more musicians like Ana Luna: someone that can bring a new sound and lyrics filled with expressive imagery is a bright light. Every piece of Tainted Silhouettes comes together in a remarkable way that creates new emotions every time you relisten.
Keep up with Ana Luna and stream Tainted Silhouettes.
